Gate Valves Series

What Is a Gate Valve?

A gate valve is a linear-motion valve that uses a flat or wedge-shaped gate (disc) that moves perpendicular to the fluid flow to start or stop flow. When fully open, the gate is completely withdrawn from the flow path, providing an unobstructed passage with virtually zero pressure drop — making gate valves the ideal choice for on/off isolation in straight-line pipeline applications.

Gate valves are among the most widely used valve types in industrial piping due to their bi-directional capability, minimal flow resistance, and ability to handle a wide range of fluids including viscous oils, slurries, and high-temperature steam. They are used in oil & gas transmission, power generation, water distribution, fire protection, refining, and chemical processing.

TANGGONG VALVE GROUP has manufactured industrial gate valves since 1990 at our facility in Wenzhou, China — "China's Valve Capital." We hold API 600, API 603, CE, TUV, and ISO 9001:2015 certifications. All gate valves are factory-tested to API 598 shell test and seat leakage standards before shipment.

Gate Valve Types: Rising Stem vs. Non-Rising Stem

🔵 Rising Stem Gate Valve (OS&Y)

Outside Screw & Yoke design with stem threads external to the valve body. The stem visibly rises above the handwheel when opening, providing clear visual position indication. The standard choice for above-ground industrial service.

  • Size: DN50 – DN2000 (2" – 80")
  • Pressure: Class 150 – Class 2500
  • Best for: Oil & gas, petrochemical, power plants
  • Body: WCB, WC6, WC9, CF8, CF8M
  • Visible open/close position indicator

🟠 Non-Rising Stem Gate Valve (NRS)

The stem threads are inside the valve body with no external stem movement. Compact design for installations with limited vertical space — ideal for underground service, utility vaults, and marine applications.

  • Size: DN50 – DN1200 (2" – 48")
  • Pressure: Class 125 – Class 300
  • Best for: Water mains, buried service, utilities
  • Resilient seated option for water service
  • Low profile, space-efficient design

🟢 Forged Steel Gate Valve

Forged body construction for superior strength under high pressure and elevated temperature. Integral body with bolted or welded bonnet. Designed for critical high-pressure process lines.

  • Size: DN15 – DN100 (½" – 4")
  • Pressure: Class 800 – Class 2500
  • Body: A105, F304, F316, F51 (Duplex)
  • SW, BW, NPT, flanged connections
  • For steam, power plants, high-pressure gas

🔷 Knife Gate Valve

Uni-directional knife gate with sharp-edge gate that cuts through slurry, pulp, and viscous media. Through conduit design with no seat cavity that can trap solids. For mining, wastewater, and pulp & paper industries.

  • Size: DN50 – DN1200 (2" – 48")
  • Body: Cast iron, ductile iron, SS304, SS316
  • Seat: Metal, EPDM, NBR, PTFE
  • Through conduit, non-clogging design
  • For slurry, pulp, wastewater, mining

Frequently Asked Questions — Gate Valves

What is the difference between rising stem and non-rising stem gate valves?

A rising stem gate valve (OS&Y) has the stem threads outside the valve body, so the stem visibly rises above the handwheel when opening — providing a clear visual indicator of valve position. It is ideal for above-ground industrial service. A non-rising stem gate valve (NRS) keeps stem threads inside the body with no external stem movement, making it more compact — typically used where vertical space is limited such as underground pipelines and utility vaults. The NRS design is common in water distribution networks using AWWA standards.

What are gate valves used for?

Gate valves are primarily used for on/off isolation — fully open or fully closed — in pipelines where minimal pressure drop is required. Common applications include: oil & gas trunk pipeline isolation, refinery unit block valves, power plant steam and feedwater isolation, municipal water distribution mains, fire protection system main valves, chemical plant reactor isolation, tank farm manifold valves, and mining slurry pipeline isolation. Gate valves provide bi-directional tight shut-off with minimal flow resistance when fully open.

Can a gate valve be used for throttling?

No. Gate valves are designed for on/off service only and should not be used for throttling. When a gate valve is partially open, high-velocity flow across the gate and seat causes accelerated erosion, vibration, wire-drawing of the seat surface, and premature failure. The gate disc and seat can be permanently damaged by the resulting turbulence and cavitation. For flow regulation or throttling, use a globe valve, control valve, or butterfly valve specifically designed for that service.

What materials are TANGGONG gate valves available in?

TANGGONG manufactures gate valves in a wide range of materials to suit various service conditions: cast carbon steel (ASTM A216 WCB) for general oil & gas and water service; chrome-molybdenum alloy steel (ASTM A217 WC6, WC9) for high-temperature refinery and power plant steam service; cast austenitic stainless steel (ASTM A351 CF8/SS304, CF8M/SS316, CF3M/SS316L) for corrosive and low-temperature applications; forged carbon steel (ASTM A105) and forged stainless steel (ASTM A182 F304, F316) for high-pressure small-bore applications; ductile iron and cast iron for waterworks and non-critical services. Seat options include metal-to-metal (13Cr/Stellite), resilient (EPDM/NBR), and stellite hard-faced overlay for severe service.

What is the lead time for gate valve orders?

Standard gate valve orders from our in-stock inventory are typically shipped within 3–7 business days — this covers common sizes in WCB/CF8 from DN50 to DN300 (2" to 12"), Class 150 and Class 300. Custom material grades, special trim configurations, large-diameter valves (DN350+), or bulk orders typically require 4–8 weeks depending on material availability, testing requirements, and order quantity. For project-specific lead times, please contact our sales team at [email protected] with your datasheet or valve schedule.

In addition to gate valves, TANGGONG VALVE GROUP manufactures a complete range of industrial valves for all pipeline requirements:
