What Is a Fully Welded Ball Valve?

A fully welded ball valve is a ball valve with a completely welded body — no bolted flanges, no threaded connections, and no gasketed joints. After the internal ball, seats, and stem are assembled, the body is welded shut, creating a monolithic hermetic seal that eliminates all external leakage paths.

Unlike conventional bolted-body ball valves that rely on body-bonnet gaskets and stem packing bolts — all of which can degrade over time — the fully welded body guarantees zero fugitive emissions and zero groundwater ingress for the entire service life of the valve. Fully welded ball valves are the industry standard for buried natural gas and oil transmission pipelines where the valve must operate for 30+ years without maintenance access.

How is a fully welded ball valve installed underground?

TANGGONG fully welded ball valves are installed by: (1) Butt-welding the valve ends directly into the pipeline; (2) Extending the valve stem through a vertical extension pipe to above-ground level; (3) Mounting the operator (gearbox or actuator) above ground for access; (4) Applying fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) or 3-layer polyethylene (3LPE) anti-corrosion coating to the buried body; (5) Backfilling with compacted sand around the valve body; (6) Connecting cathodic protection cables before backfill. The valve itself requires no underground vault or pit — only the operator extension breaks the surface.

Does TANGGONG provide cathodic protection coatings?

Yes. TANGGONG fully welded ball valves are available with fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE), three-layer polyethylene (3LPE), or coal-tar enamel anti-corrosion coatings for cathodic protection compatibility. The valve body casting is prepared to SSPC-SP10 (near-white metal blast) standard before coating application. Coating thickness and holiday testing are conducted per project specifications. We also provide electrical bonding lugs for cathodic protection cable connection.
