butterfly valve is a quarter-turn rotary valve that uses a flat, circular disc mounted on a shaft through its diameter as the closure element. When the disc is rotated 90° to be parallel to the flow, the valve is fully open with the disc edge-on to the fluid stream, providing a relatively straight flow path. When rotated back 90° to be perpendicular to the pipe axis, the disc seals against a seat to provide tight shut-off.
